School for International Training (SIT)
American Partnership
For around 11 years, Phoenix Zululand has enjoyed a strong partnership with the School for International Training (SIT), based in Durban. SIT draws students from American Universities into a programme that allows for them to travel abroad for exposure, reconciliation and development studies.
The exchanges involve group visits from the students to participate in active Phoenix programmes running in one of our prisons. (Usually 2-3 visits per year, at three different prison sites) The visits are consistently a rich experience for both inmates and students alike. Life experiences are shared, lives are witnessed and real engagement takes place, usually on specific areas of focus (like addictions, gender abuse, prison reform etc.) The following picture shows Yale University students during a visit to the Mthunzini prison in June 2019.
